Proper Foot Care: Optimize your Nursing Shoe

Proper foot care is important for everybody but most especially for people who spend about 8-16 hours of the day on their feet, for example Nurses. Wearing the right shoes is not all there is to maintain a pain-free and healthy work shift. How you maintain your nursing shoe and the feet that wears it matters a lot.

For medical practitioners especially nurses, proper foot care is a necessity. A few minutes of monitoring the condition of your feet goes a long way in ensuring healthy feet throughout those long shifts.

  • The best shoes for nurses can provide you with comfort and support but that is not all there is to achieving a healthy foot. Many infections on the foot are caused by poor circulation. Also, untreated sores can lead to infections so carefully inspecting your feet for sores and blisters every day is a worthwhile practice. Do not ignore blisters, red spots and discoloration as these are early signs of a sore waiting to happen.
  • Wash your feet on a daily basis, paying special attention to the toes and in-between the toes because these spots tend to encourage growth of bacteria and fungus. Some people usually in a hurry do not dry their wet feet before putting on socks and slipping them into their shoes. This must be avoided! Dry your feet properly after washing before wearing your socks and subsequently your nursing shoes.
  • Trim your toenails regularly, do not let them overgrow. Overgrown toenails can lead to injuries and cause your nursing shoes to feel as though they don’t fit; causing discomfort on an already stressful job. The best time to do this is immediately after a shower because the nails are soft at this time and easier to cut. Use scissors or cutters designed for trimming fingernails. Desist from using every sharp object you find for this task. Trimming your toenails also affords you the opportunity to inspect your feet properly.
  • Always wear fresh, clean and comfortable socks with your nursing shoes. These must not be too tight nor too loose; get socks with a comfortable fitting.
  • Examine your nursing shoes regularly for signs of uneven wear. This indicates that there are pressure points on your feet.
  • Opt for quality leather shoes because they breathe better and allow your feet access to some air; also they adapt the shape of your feet better than other materials.

Proper foot care will make sure you get the most out of your favorite pair of nursing shoes.
